Maghi as New Year of Tharu

Maghi as New Year of Tharu
I told already in my previous article that Nepal is very rich in cast, culture, language and religion. There live different casts like, Tharu, Magar, Rai, Limbu, Bahun, Chhetri, Tamang, Newar, Thakuri….etc. These all casts have their own identification and they live in different part and different society of Nepal. Tharus with agriculture base live in Terai belt of Nepal.

Tharus are known as very labourious cast in Nepal. They are totally involved in agriculture. They do hard labour in the field to get good production from their field. After harvesting the crops from the field. They start to sell and earn income. But the government of Nepal has not consideration towards Tharu and their occupation and has not brought the programs to promote them. So that, Tharus are not success to get income whatever they expect.

At 15th of January, there held 1st of Magh. And 1st of Magh is happy new year of Tharu society. In this festival Tharus’ all economic activities are done. They celebrate it for 7 or 8 days. The previous day of 1st Magh they cur pig, goat, hen…etc and eat. Young and eldest people also take alcohol and sing, dance and enjoy all the night. And morning (1st of Magh) they go to river, take bath and worship the god by going to the temple. There is religious belief that if they do so the god will provide their desire and they will be far from bad works done previously. And they prepare Dhikari ( a kind of food ) at morning time and they eat it with their relative and neighbors at day time. In 2nd day of Magh they make Khichdi (a kind of food by mixing ghee, pulse, rice, salt, ….etc.) and eat. And coming days they select owner and sub owner for the village by organizing general meeting. The owner and all villagers prepare rules and regulation to rule the village for one year. If someone breaks the rules and regulations he is punished by villagers. So that, Maghi is known as New Year and election of new face for village.
